Opinions Wanted: Fabrics for Charlie Cushions

For a few years now I’ve been working on developing an awesome product for Janery – fabulous waterproof dog (and cat) beds.  However, there have been some bumps in the road, and some distractions, so it’s taken far longer than I ever expected.

But guess what?  I have finally set a launch date for the Charlie Cushions.  In the end of July they will be coming to my shop, and I couldn’t be more excited.

However, there’s one big obstacle between me and that launch:  I can’t decide on the fabrics that I will offer!  I want fun, current, and colorful fabric options rather than the drab solid colors or boring paw prints that so many mainstream dog beds are made of.

I have chosen these four Jessica Jones fabrics:

But I also will be choosing 4 or 5 of these fabrics, and ordering a whole bolt of each one.  It’s so hard to choose – can you help me decide?

If you’d like to chime in, please visit my “Charlie Cushions” Pinterest board and “like” your favorites.  If you have suggestions for fabrics other than that, or you can’t use Pinterest, comments are also welcome, of course.

I can’t promise I’ll take your advice or use your choices, but I can promise that I will consider everyone’s suggestions!  Thank you SO much for your help!

I really like the Adrian Green and the Rosa Organic Green (maybe I’m just really into green?!) Can’t wait to see what you pick! 🙂

I am in love! The first image is my favorite, the bed is thick and comfy, made of a simply gorgeous pattern – but you have also thought about durability, ability to wash the bed (works well for the size of the crate bed on your site now for sure), and the waterproof angle! Do you take custom orders?

I had just mentioned something of a similar concept to my husband – but about storage bins. Many of our canvas-like bins etc attract and hold onto fur. Our dog has Addison’s and sheds a bit more than normal. I’ve been looking for ways to keep our items clean.

Then I remembered a few items we have used for protecting artwork and photography – this got me thinking of a concept:

Using the directions to make fabric- covered bins by covering cardboard, then finding something that is pet safe, to spray over the fabric to create a “finish” that allows the fur to “slide” off the fabric.

This would not work for a bed likely with washing, but could work for other beautiful creations to keep them looking beautiful at first impression, rather than screaming “pet fur central.” 🙂

I’d love to hear your thoughts on how you control pet fur around the home, under the bed and my console table are areas that drive me crazy 🙂

    Love your site!!!

Thanks so much Samantha! I am not sure yet if I’ll be taking custom orders for the dog beds. Since I’m still working full time I may not have time to do custom ones – still have so much to figure out! I love your idea about a hair-proof bin for storage. Maybe try covering it in fabric and then sealing it with clear layers of furniture sealant? Like polyurethane? Alternatively, there are laminated cotton fabrics that are gorgeous. They have a sleek, waterproof, wipeable surface. They would probably work great! I know Joel Dewberry has some.

As for keeping hair under control around the house, oh gosh. It’s been such a losing battle for us lately. We keep the “kids” off the furniture, but the floors have been insane lately. We just vacuum a lot. I’m lucky because Ryan also vacuums so it’s not just me. I have noticed in this house we have wall-to-wall carpet, so the fur doesn’t seem to accumulate under furniture as much – but when I had hardwoods I had to use the vacuum wand all the time to get dust bunnies out from under things. Sigh.
