Choosing the perfect wedding invitation for our celebration has been more challenging than expected.
I’ve learned that I could look at graphic design and illustration and fonts all day. I’ve also learned that I’m crazy about the texture of letterpress. But thanks, in part, to your comments, we’ll skip the letterpress for the cheaper digital printing. Then, after the wedding, I’ll order a custom letterpress poster for us to frame instead of the invite. Or maybe I’ll do both.
Now for the design dilemmas: We don’t want to get too hokey with a theme, and our bright Caribbean color palette of orange, lime green, and hibiscus pink must be used sparingly in order to remain modern and classy. We could use a palm tree or tropical flower theme – but I thought a clean, modern design without pictures would be more snazzy. My instinct was confirmed when I looked through pages and pages of invites on Etsy and stationery sites. All the tropical invites were either too old-fashioned formal, or went too far with the cheesiness.
I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I have “reality” TV to thank for this sudden understanding of understated good taste. I’ve been loving My Fair Wedding with David Tutera ( instant play on Netflix). The show focuses on ridiculously themed weddings, but David always manages to take their concept and make it elegant and wedding-appropriate. It may sound crazy, but I’m really paying attention to how he does it, and learning a lot about incorporating elements of a theme into modern design.
With this in mind, I pinned like a fool for weeks, then sat Ryan down last night to look through our Pinterest Wedding Stationery board. We quickly eliminated any designs that he didn’t like, or ones where I said “what on earth was I thinking when I pinned that?”
I know I said no graphics or pictures, but I love the blocked style of this Time Flies invite from Minted. I love the idea of vintage poster-style stationery, but so many of the designs go over the top with a slew of different fonts and colors and type sizes. Way too many. I get lost trying to read my way through them. Time Flies, however, offers a great balance of color and style.
Sadly, it’s once again not anything to do with our theme. Wouldn’t it make a cute baby announcement, though? Maybe we’ll order it next spring. 😉
The bright colors of this Summer Tones invite from Printable Press really caught my attention. Again, these graphics are done so artfully. Ryan also likes it. Our only concerns are: the summer flowers have nothing to do with our wedding theme, and I don’t love the traditional fonts that it uses. On the other hand, you just buy the design and then print it yourself, so the cost savings are pretty excellent.
I’m not one to jump on style or color bandwagons like Ikat or chevron or the like. But despite my better judgement about following trends, I was drawn to this Ombre wedding invite by Minted. Ryan also liked it, saying it was a top contender so far. I think what I like about it is the straightforward, modern font overlaid on the murky, muddled color background. The coloring evokes an abstract beach image in my mind, like a piece of art – maybe that’s why I like it so much.
We haven’t made a decision yet, but we will do so this weekend for sure. If we go with the Ombre ones, the invites & envelopes will cost about $200, and that’s worth it to us. The print-it-yourself option could be cheaper, but my concern is that a strong color invite may not come out as well if we DIY the printing. However, I’ll DIY the RSVP cards and other invite inserts.
If you’re married, did you feel the pressure to get “just the right” invites? I feel like it’s important for setting the tone and theme for the wedding, like it has to be *perfect*. But maybe it’s not as big a deal as I think.
There’s one thing I have figured out during this invitation-choosing process: Traditional invitations are most certainly not my style. What about you?
PS: I am loving the blog Oh So Beautiful Paper. And in their sidebar they have advertising from a ton of fabulous letterpress and stationery companies.

I also love David Tutera. He does amazing things with themes from Day of the Dead to pirates to princesses. You said it – “understated good taste”! And he’s so diplomatic and classy in his responses to the brides’ ideas. We are having our wedding at the beach and wanted a beach theme but nothing hokey. It’s not a destination wedding really because the location is my parents’ home where I grew up, so the really tropical, travel ones weren’t right. We ended up settling on the Stylish Starfish from Wedding Paper Divas. My fiancee liked the border and I liked the simple starfish up top and it came in brown and orange (2 of our colors – it’s a fall wedding). I then used a personalized stamp from Etsy and some purple (our third color) ink to finish the envelopes. Plus, as Costco members, there’s a 20% discount and with the digital printing, you couldn’t beat the price.
I love love love the ombre invites! Before I even read it, I thought about a beach and how perfect that invite is for your wedding! I spent quite a bit of time designing our invites and in the end, I may be the only one who remembers what they look like… which is important to me! However, our invites did set the tone for the wedding and I got lots of compliments on them afterwards.
Can’t wait to see what you choose Jane!
When we got married, we designed our own and went to a local print shop to print them. We sent out 400+ (I believe) and it cost us around $130.00. I think that invitations can set the tone for what type of wedding guests will expect. However, when it’s over – guests throw them in the trash!
So funny you should be talking about all the anxiety and fun of picking the right invite. I mentioned a bit about the same thing on my blog today. I designed our invites and I tend to freak out and think they’re totally not going to work, then I go looking online for other options then realize that what I created it just right. David Tutera is a good mentor, isn’t he. I lIke. And I like the ombre. It sounds like you came to them through a thoughtful process and they are gorgeous.
I LOVE the ombre invites … so gorgeous. Can’t wait to see what you pick! I spent a ridiculous time designing our invites, with an actual graphic designer friend. I knew if I did it myself it would never get done. Our were incredibly simple, but with gorgeous fonts. Love.
The lovely ombre design reminded me of this.

I know that she does designs & prints but I’ve no idea how much they would cost you. But you might be able to get a similar plain letter press invite and watercolor them yourself.
You are spot-on with your questions, my friend! I’ve been going over the very same issues myself… aka I’ve been talking to myself a lot. lol 🙂 Not long after we got engaged, Mike and I made a list of the really important parts of our wedding, and we determined that invitations are something we’re totally okay DIYing. We don’t love the traditional invitation and it’s many, many parts, and neither of us can understand spending all that money for details we don’t really care about. So I downloaded a bunch of awesome free fonts, scoured websites for wording ideas, and got to work putting together an invitation that is simple and elegant. I’m sure I have some tweaking to do but I’m incredibly happy with the way it’s turned out. We’ll hold onto the template for a little while longer, and then do the printing and assembling ourselves on recycled paper.
I had a little crisis of faith yesterday when I received two different beautiful wedding invitations on gorgeous paper suites, but then I remembered those friends had chosen what was important to them, and that’s not necessarily what’s important to us!
As usual with weddings, I think it’s less about tradition and more about finding something that you love and is really truly you (you in the plural sense here!) and then you’ll know you’ve found the right solution 🙂
Anyway I’ll stop rambling on your blog – I really love that ombre invite for its bold colors and fonts, and I think it would beautifully set the tone for your wedding! Good luck making the final call 🙂
Invites were important to us for our wedding, but not spend a million dollars important. I designed our own (http://www.etsy.com/listing/90070010/5-x-7-printable-wedding-invitation-and) and had them printed locally and pretty inexpensively. I love them still to this day. I’ve designed invites for several friends weddings and now I sell customizable diy printable wedding invites in my Etsy shop. http://www.thecolorfullife.etsy.com
I need to check out that show!
Letterpress is amazing. There were several fine press printers with the Sacramento Book Collectors Club who often brought keepsakes to our meetings.
Have you seen this site? http://arteriolesque.blogspot.com/2012/01/quaker-wedding-certificate-signing.html She does calligraphy and her wedding certificates are just breathtaking.
Holy cow. Those wedding certificates are amazing! Thank you so much for sharing – I am going to contact her about a custom one. Seriously in love. 🙂 Thank you!!
First, let me just say that I love your blog. I found it about 4 hours ago when I was looking for a way to organize my jewelry, and I’ve been reading ever since. Love it!
Anyways, wedding invites are insane. 🙂 I’m in the process of planning my own wedding (I’ve got 19 months, thank goodness), and the invitations are one of the biggest stresses for me, for now at least. And yes, I have the same feeling that they have to be just right because they set the mood for the whole event. Maybe I’m over-thinking it too, lol. I’ve never seen My Fair Wedding, but I really think I should look it up…
That being said, I really like Summer Tones, but I think that Ombre Wedding does feel more beach-y. Of course, my opinion is slightly bias, because I’m DIYing a design similar to Summer Tones. I think. We’ll see if I change my mind in a month. 😉
[…] Can you guess which invites we […]
We married in the days before even computers were prevalent and Etsy was a dream. When we got engaged, I filled out the cards for ALL of the wedding mags (the one-time only ones that are more catalogs than mags) and yanked pics when I saw something I liked. Hubby-to-be was on a long business trip and didn’t really care what I chose since it was me and not the wedding he chose (awwwww *sniffle). We had a “Cinderella” theme and chose elements that worked with that….with Green and Purple wedding colors. Everyone that was there or has seen pics since (over 13 years ago now) comments how much more elegant and beautiful it all goes together (since they think PURPLE dresses?!?!?! EWWWW). Even one of my bridesmaids thought she’d look like a plum….she apologized after she saw the dress and her in it. 😉
Ok, that comment from your husband is super sweet!
