Office Makeover, Part 2: New furniture layout

Well, it’s no grand makeover but at least I’ve rearranged my office/craft room so that it can handle all the functions I ask of it.  I’m loving it!!

But first – I feel very fortunate to have a whole craft room.  But even with all the space, I was trying to sew, cut fabric, and use my computer all on one desk.  Hence, when I said it was a ‘crowded wreck,‘ that’s because I was having to move the computer every time I wanted to spread out fabric and sew.  And stuff like that.  So while it was bugging me, you guys provided a great reality check and reminded me to be grateful for the space I have.

Now, back to the makeover:

I got a second, smaller desk from Ikea so that I could create a desk / computer station that was separate from my sewing table.  This way I have a clean workspace when I work from home, and the sewing mess can’t spill over onto the desk.  I played around with furniture arrangements for what seemed like hours . . . but finally settled on this so that I can still see out the window from either work space.

I cleared off the top of my dresser (where I’d been storing hair accessories and scarves) to make room for the stacks of fabric  and other stuff that would otherwise be out on my sewing table.  The dresser isn’t permanent – I’ve already sketched plans for a large shelving unit I’d like to build, to maximize the entire wall.

As you can also see, I have an easy chair now.  I brought the dog chair up from the basement because the pup we’re babysitting likes to keep me company.  (My dogs, on the other hand, abandon me.)

Now I’m debating if I should dedicate some time to painting the room this weekend.  I’m torn, because I have exactly 2 weeks until my self-imposed deadline for launching my Etsy shop.  If I spend time priming and painting (I’m guessing about 6 hours), that’s about 6 hours that I could have spent making my products or finishing my logo.  But I can’t hang shelves on the walls before I paint, and those shelves will really provide much-needed storage as the products and supplies continue to stack up.

Alternately, I could make do with the space I have.  There’s a bit more space in my closet after the reorganization. But I think that continuing to work on decorating my space will also provide a much-needed break from working.  What to do, what to do . . .

PS:  I have no idea if I’ll be able to keep up with 5 x week blog posts as I plow through these next 14 days.  Which is a bummer, because I’ve got a traffic jam a mile long of things I’d like to write about.

Focus on the Etsy deadline and all else be left alone for a while. Try to blog, or write the posts in advance and queue ’em up! Self-imposed pressure is kind of a bummer. Remember: food & clean clothes are your current obligations. The rest is unimportant when you’ve got a deadline to meet.

When I was trying to find room for wedding decorations (did it all myself b/c i’m freaking crazy like that) I wound up cramming clothes into an unused closet and dedicated a larger closet (like the one here in your office!) for stacking and hanging (hangers became my BFF) crafts/supplies/completed decorations/etc… Def focus on the deadline! Painting and shelving can wait and will def be worth the wait =)

I’m going to have to slack off on posting too… I have a zillion deadlines popping up and I probably shouldn’t be on your blog right now (busted!) but I had to stop by and leave a little love <3

    Good luck chica!

i myself couldn’t wait to paint and put the shelves up, because i’m so impatient when i have the right idea that i can’t focus on other things. so my advise would be to finish the room, because it would “break” your etsy work a bit (and you’re doing it for the long term benefit of your shop anyway) and give you new energy and push ypu forward.
or maybe i’m just being selfish – i can’t wait to see “after” pictures! 🙂

    good luck!

    Make Ryan post. Promise cookies.

I’m loving where your craft room is heading.

I had to giggle a little at your ”
dog chair.” And that pup makes me want a slobbery kiss.

I like where you’re going! Do you need to paint?–it’s a nice color as is, and looks like it’s in good shape.
Good luck with the etsy stuff.
Oh, and that dog! What a cutie!

This is so good – complete with cute dog! When we moved into our recent apartment, I finally got a whole room for crafting/office, too and it has seriously changed my life. Enjoy your space! I hope it helps you reach your goals.
