In Progress, Primary Bedroom

Bedroom Makeover, part 2: Perplexed by paint

I woke up Sunday determined to make progress on the bedroom redesign.   And while progress was made, it certainly wasn’t the progress I had planned.

After the first of my two trips to Home Depot, I realized that the activities I’d planned were out of order.  Before I did anything else I had to paint the ceiling.

So I stared at my dozens of paint chips, trying to find the shade that most closely resembled the wall color.   The contractor had left behind several paint cans. . . but none for this bedroom.

There are so many gorgeous colors in the sea glass / ocean color family.   I wanted to use each and every one of them, but choices had to be made.  Ryan was concerned that the painted ceiling would make the room look darker, but I knew that a light enough tone would only make it more fabulous – especially with the clean white molding lining the space.  I chose the four colors closest to the wall color, and slapped them on the ceiling.

The lighting in the room varies so much during the course of a day – and every change had me re-analyzing the color swatches.  Finally I went with my gut, and chose the earth-friendly FreshAire Choice paint color (farthest on the right).

Off I went to Home Depot (again) where I scored one gallon of FreshAire Choice in Hidden Sea Glass.  Once home, I set about clearing, taping, and draping the room.  And that’s when I remembered how much I hate painting.

I finished just in time to welcome my boyfriend home before catching Design Star on HGTV.  Results will follow later this week. . . but right now I’m really not sure how I feel about those results.

Ryan commented that painting is always bound to be frustrating, because it’s really hard to know what you’re in for until you actually cover the whole surface and see how the color works en masse.  I think I have to agree., as there’s not one time when the color I’ve painted has turned out exactly as I expected.  Ever.  What about you?

I have the same problem with paint colors. But I learned to live with my results, at least for a while. The only colors I seem to love no matter what are dark browns and greys. Go figure. Moody girl that I am. I bet it will look amazing.

I felt the same way when I used BM Smoke throughout the common areas in my little place. It took quite some time to like it and I still like it best in natural light and not so much in artificial light, which makes it feel like a brighter blue.

I have the weird splotches of various failed greens still on display in my dining room to prove it.

Yep, I can relate as well. I finally painted my bedroom with the pale gray it took me months to choose, and it’s SO much darker than I ever imagined. It’s slowly growing on me.

Yes, yes, I hate painting. The taping off part is the worst!

And I love the idea about painting the ceiling to contrast with the white trim. Nice job!
