During the design planning stage of the nursery, I knew I wanted to have art above the crib for her to look at as she grows. When I was a small child, I remember spending a lot of time staring at the wall above my bed – usually when I was supposed to be napping, or sleeping, or when I was waking up in the morning. I had a nice room, but that wall was plain – probably because I couldn’t be trusted to keep art hanging on the wall. However, there was some sort of bolt embedded in the plaster, and the pattern of it was pushing out and very visible in the white wall.
It looked like a large cheerio.
I spent a lot of time looking at that cheerio and wondering about it, until I was old enough to realize it was a bolt, not a cheerio.
Remembering this, I wanted to give the baby something awesome to look at, but I needed it to be safe from falling on her. A mini mural painted onto the wall seemed to be the best option, safe from prying hands.
I chose a pattern from one of the fabrics I was using in the nursery. (If the fabric looks familiar, it’s because there are pillows and catnip cuddlers using it in my shop. http://www.janery.com )
I asked my friend Crysty to come help me paint the mural, because she’s the one with artistic talent – not me. She’s done beautiful murals in rooms all over Richmond; in fact, it all started when a realtor needed someone to paint a mural in a show house. She didn’t have training, but was willing to try, and it turned out she had a talent for it.
Crysty sketched the pattern onto the wall with pencil, and then I helped her fill it in with craft paints. It was especially fun to do the blue “flowers” or whatever they’re supposed to be. The white dots are actually made with finger dabs, because we found that painting circles with brushes looked too stiff.
I absolutely love how the nursery mural turned out. I hope that Maple loves looking at it!
