Moving My Office to the Basement

For the last few months, Ryan and I have been busy getting the house ready for the baby’s arrival.   Her nursery has moved into the space formerly known as my office/ dressing room, and with that I had to say goodbye to my beloved closet and workspace.  It was fun while it lasted!

After tossing around several ideas, we tried setting up a small office space for me in the corner of the living room, but for blogging and running a business, I needed more space. Ryan and I decided that the only reasonable solution was to move my office to the basement.

I was reluctant to give up a nice window view, but logistics won out over the lure of fresh spring breezes and a view of the neighborhood.

We rearranged the basement furniture yet again, reverting to a layout that I’d really liked in the past (and I don’t know why we ever changed it). The main room of the basement is once again divided in two; the TV area is on one side and my office is on the other.
For now my office is simple, with just the farmhouse desk I built and a file box. However, I have plans to upgrade it with some shelving and a larger workspace. It turns out I need a lot of space to spread out and write, pen to paper, when working on business – and my desk doesn’t provide nearly enough of that.

There’s some hidden benefits to this basement workspace that I hadn’t considered:

1.  It allows me to better separate work and home life, because my work is no longer taking place in the main floor, and isn’t part of the space where I get dressed every day.

2.  Having the office downstairs, just steps from the Janery sewing studio means that I can have the baby napping downstairs while I work in both spaces, and not have to move her around during the work time.

It’s always fun to start the new year, full of expectations and goals – and this year is no exception.  Having a fresh, new office space to use is just the icing on the cake!
