I never thought I’d get excited about birdwatching, but it’s a hobby that’s slowly grown on me in the three years we’ve rented this house.
Our leafy backyard is home to a fun variety of birds, most of whom are brave enough to stay out in the yard even when all the cats, dogs, and I are on the back porch. (Don’t worry, I don’t let the cats get close to them!)
With my new(ish) camera and super zoom lens, I’ve been able to get some decent shots of my different little friends as they congregate around the bird feeder that Ryan’s family gave me for Christmas.
Sometimes I chop up my apple cores and stale bread into tiny little pieces, and put them out for the birds, forgetting that there are also squirrels out there. They may be pests, but they’re awfully cute, too.
Not pictured: The Oriole that I saw once. Have you ever done any bird watching? What kinds of birds do you seen in your neighborhood?

How funny. I can totally relate! I never thought I’d be into birdwatching either, but where my husband and I rent now (we moved in around last October) we get a ton of birds. We have a lot of bamboo, trees, and plants, and see blue jays and cardinals regularly (and other birds I don’t recognize). We have the same bird feeder as you, too, but a larger version. Our last rental was very different in some ways — we had more living space indoors, but relatively no living space outdoors. Now we have less living space indoors, but a beautifully landscaped yard, and a huge deck, so being able to enjoy the outdoors in a simple, everyday way has been one of my favorite things about where we live now.
That’s awesome! I would love to have bamboo in my yard, even though I know it grows and spreads like a weed. I definitely would take a smaller indoor space if it meant a larger outdoor one any day.
looks like a nuthatch to me
Yep! I was thinking the same thing. Here are some pics of blue jays https://www.google.com/search?q=blue+jay&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv.47008514,d.aWM&biw=1366&bih=576&wrapid=tlif136970609922210&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=bQCkUbiAIeXDygGvzoHoAQ
Thanks, Tori!
