For years I’ve had random orchid plants struggling to survive in various nooks and crannies of my homes. They always irked me because I felt the random pots never had homes, and were really just acting as clutter. Add on the fact that none of them were thriving. A new solution was needed.
Before we proceed – this was a project I did in November. . . I just never got around to writing about it!
Finally it hit me – why not group them in a sunny window? Perhaps my sofa end table?
I had to be sure that the beautiful wood table was protected from the moisture in the pots, though. This silver tray, originally purchased (pre-blogging days, no less!) at Goodwill was the perfect size for the three pots.
Two of the orchids were already in nice pots, but the third was still in the tiny clay pot it came with.
I didn’t have a good pot handy, and I didn’t want to deal with spray paint, so I grabbed a scrap of fabric.
I cut it to size and then wrapped it around the little pot, securing the fabric’s edge with some blue washi tape. Not the most slick job, but I knew the taped seam would not be visible to the casual observer when I set the tray up.
And see? I was right! People don’t really notice the tape when looking at the pots straight on. In fact one friend asked me “where did you get that super cute pot?”
As for the orchids – well, they’re really thriving in the sunny living room window. See the new stalk poking up from the smallest orchid below?
The two big guys are also happy, shooting out new roots all over the place. And I’m happy, because there are no longer random potted plants sitting around the house.
Now I just have to remember to keep watering them. Anyone else have that problem? 😉

my friend owned a flower shop and always gave me orchids, i however would bring them to the brink of death and she would bring them back to super life! gorgeous and lush. she told me since i am not a good orchid person we would take baby steps. mist every day, once a week put 3-4 ice cubes in the pot to melt/water the plant and just keep in filtered light. well, they are alive but no fabulous new shoots like yours.
Michele – it took my orchids at least 8 months to get this healthy…so there’s hope! The ice cube trick is such a great idea!
The ‘fabric’ pot looks so lovely, that it will probably remind u to water the orchids 🙂
I love looking at orchids at store (HD had some super bright blue ones recently) but I’ve heard they are tricky and since I have a black thumb I’ve never brought one home with me.
I’ve found that the best way to grow orchids is to re-pot them after bringing them home, then ignore them except for a once weekly(ish) watering. 🙂
