Exploring Miami’s “MiMo” District
Aside from eating all the amazing food I shared yesterday, Ryan and I were also looking forward to exploring Miami’s “MiMo District” – an old neighborhood north of downtown filled with mid-century modern architecture. In several major newspapers I’d read travel articles discussing all the new restaurants and shops in this recently gentrified area, and the stories had us dying to check the place out.
After filling our bellies at the Latin Cafe, we hopped into a cab and swerved up Rt. 1 (Biscayne Boulevard) through the city, with a very charismatic driver who thanked Jesus very, very vocally and enthusiastically every time the car made a turn without having to be re-started. I got super excited (and may or may not have squealed) when we started passing very interesting and retro looking buildings.
When she dropped us off on a side street (63rd?) and we walked one block to check out the bay, we were immediately conscious of groups of loitering people just watching us. Fortunately their was a police officer stationed nearby. But still, we walked right back to the main boulevard, thinking we’d be better off staying away from the side streets. Adventures in Miami: What We Ate
I think I just go to Miami for the food and drink.
Oh, and the palm trees, the beaches, the pools, the people-watching. Meeting Sunny. And the decor at the fancy-schmancy hotels. But the top priority is eating and drinking. A lot.
So even though this isn’t a food blog, in honor of my friend Jenn’s What I Ate Wednesday party, I’m going to share a glimpse at the tasty goodness we pigged out on in Miami. There’s a bit of fab decor at the end, so hang in there.
My fave spot for good, cheap food is the Latin Cafe 2000 in downtown Miami. It’s a locals kinda spot, with a huge outdoor bar and patio dining. Sure, it’s on a busy corner of Biscayne Boulevard where they’ve been doing road construction for at least the last three years, but that doesn’t bother me. If I want swanky ambiance I go to South Beach and pay 3x as much for the same food. Anyway, we hit the Latin Cafe several times on this visit.
The Ceviche was something like $7 and was ab fab.
Fried green plantains stuffed with shrimp. Yummy. (Fried cassava in background.)
We also had: pork tamales, Yuquita Frita (fried cassava w/ cilantro sauce), Camarones el Aljillo (shrimp in garlic sauce), Tostones con Mojo (fried plantain chips w/ garlic sauce).
We washed that feast down with plenty of Mojitos – they make the best ones in town.
And then, to ward off any scary effects of my mojito madness, I had a few of these tasty delights:
Cafe Cubano (a.k.a. Cuban Coffee)
On South Beach, we had dinner two nights in a row at Sushi Samba – a place that I found with my A-Team ladies during last year’s visit. With a huge outdoor eating area in prime people-watching territory on the Lincoln Road pedestrian mall, this place couldn’t be more ideally located. It was dark when we ate (10 pm is perfectly normal for dinner in SoBe) so the photos are fewer. But here are some faves:
Fried Shishito Peppers with lemon and sea salt (Japanese Hot Peppers)
The Shishito peppers aren’t as hot as the description sounds. They’re seriously delish, and it’s frustrating I can’t find them on menus anywhere else.
Extra points go to Sushi Samba for keeping Ryan’s glass filled with yummy concoctions that were alcohol-free. (He doesn’t drink.)
Strawberry Mojito washed down the Lobster Roll & Kobe Beef Roll
At Sushi Samba we also feasted on Kobe Beef Tartar, which is basically raw beef of the most fabulous quality. I had tons of awesome Ceviche. We finished the meal with an awesome chocolate banana dessert that was served in a mini UFO.
Love a good cocktail coupled with gorgeous design? Then in the afternoon you must head on over to the Mondrian Miami, situated on the Biscayne Bay side of South Beach. They have a mouth-watering selection of Caipirinhas and other cocktails, all of which can be enjoyed at their poolside lounge overlooking the bay and downtown Miami. I shared photos of their fab decor two years ago, so this time we’ll just peek at this year’s visit.
One afternoon we grabbed our books and headed over to the Mondrian’s poolside lounge to read and drink.
Why would we go to a fancy hotel’s pool to read?
Because the decor was divine
We were lookin’ good
The chili passionfruit cocktail is the best drink ever invented
And the sunset was breathtaking.
I’ve collected some great cocktail recipes from all my times in Miami. Would you guys like me to share some of them on the blog?
Be sure to stop back tomorrow to read about our somewhat-sketchy adventures in Miami’s Mid-century Modern district. In the mean time, here are some previous posts on my Miami adventures:

{Re}Fashion: Little Black Dress for Miami
Introducing: {Re}fashion
As a kid I dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. But my parents felt that I should get a music degree, as it was apparently “more useful.” Hm. Well, my degree from a good liberal arts school did help me score a corporate gig that’s made my life a lot easier, at least financially. But it’s done nothing to satisfy my drive to create things with my hands. I’ve felt especially oppressed lately, now that I sit in a small, dark cubicle.
So when I’m not working, blogging, or working on my future business, I’ve got a new hobby. It stems from my creative, fashion-designer-wanna-be urge and an even stronger drive to not purchase new clothes, but to work with what’s on hand: Refashioning old, awkward, boring, or downright ugly garments into fabulous new pieces that I actually want to wear.
It all started in May, with my new sewing machine and a $1 thrifted little black dress that I purchased four years ago. As I was packing for my long weekend in South Beach with my favorite ladies, I realized I didn’t have a little black dress. And you’ve got to have a little black dress for Miami, especially when you’re hanging out here:

and here:

So I grabbed that ankle-length $1 dress, hemmed it short, and changed the two-spaghetti-strap neckline to a one-shoulder neckline, and created:
The one dollar little black dress.

Oh, how I wish I’d taken a before picture.
I loved my one-dollar-dress so much that I wore it out every night. Paired with my favorite shoes, I felt like a million bucks instead of $1.
If you dig this fun and frugal hobby as much as I do, then stay tuned for the next installment of {Re}Fashion next week, when I share a revamp of my mom’s 1960′s era hipppie dress.
Is there anything gathering dust in your closet that you think you could rework into a fun piece you’d actually wear?
Divine Decor: South Beach, part 2
Last Friday, when I shared some mid-century inspired photos from latest trip to South Beach, I promised to return with a peek into one of SoBe’s most famous hotels.
Here it is, the wonderfully white and oh-so-glamorous Delano Hotel:
Isn’t that lobby divine? When you walk in, leaving the sticky Florida air at the door, you’re immediately cooled and refreshed – not only by the temperature but by the ambiance. Towering white columns and floor-to-ceiling curtains that flank the entirety of the two-story lobby, lending a dramatic yet serene vibe to the space.
Little furniture vignettes are interspersed with bar and restaurant alcoves, providing ample seating for people-watching when day turns to night and the rich come out to play. I absolutely love the drama of this high-backed sofa in the lime spring green alcove:
I’ve always loved how the marble sushi bar juts out into the lobby at an odd angle:
When night falls you can sip on a fabulous cocktail at the fabric-wrapped Rose Bar, under the light of these gorgeous chandeliers:
. . .unless you’d rather imbibe while seated in a vintage Eames rocker (I know I would!):
Of course, if you’re in the mood for some fresh air, you can always saunter right through that billowy white lobby to find yourself at one of the most beautiful pools in Miami:
The pool is, by far, one of my favorite night spots for those evenings when I’m in the mood for relaxin’ and people-watching. No photos I took of the pool area at night do it justice, so you’ll have to take my word for it – or visit it yourself! When you kick back on a poolside bed, champagne in hand, and look up to see the palms towering against the dark sky, you know life is good.
I’d love to take you inside one of the $900/night rooms, but frankly I’ve never seen one. I’ve read oodles of reviews though, and it sounds as though they’re not that exciting when compared to the dramatic opulence of the hotel’s public areas. Which is just fine and dandy to me. I’d rather stay at a cheaper hotel and save all my money for partying at the Delano, and the other fantastic hotels in the Morgans group.
So what do you think? Are you starting to see why I love the ambiance of South Beach so much?

Divine Decor: South Beach, part 1
On my recent trip to Miami’s South Beach, I couldn’t help but snap a few pictures of the fabulous decor in our hotel lobby.
One thing I love about Miami is its vibrant design and architecture. All the hotels, from the budget ones to the luxury ones, compete with each other to have as swanky a lobby as the next. Therefore you can NOT judge a SoBe hotel by its lobby. Read the reviews. But I digress. . .
When my friends and I arrived at the Doubletree Surfcomber, I was immediately in love with the lobby decor. It was a crisp modern take on the 1950′s mid-century modern aesthetic, all the way down to the Bertoia bar stools at the lobby bar.
The two (previously independent) hotel buildings were adjoined by a solarium, with views of the terrace on one side, and views over the lush, green courtyard on the other. Oh, how I would love to have a space like this in my own home.
The geometric cutout divider wall is another feature I’d love to have in my home – perhaps between my front door and my living room? I know it’s totally retro, but the coat of white paint really brings it up to speed for 2010.
I totally heart this floor lamp. I’d love to have it arching over my sofa in my tv room or my living room. And I got a kick out of the fact that the [way-too-large] throw pillows on the loveseats were made from the same fabric I used in my old guest room!
It was all I could do not to steal this credenza for my own home. The white marble top really takes it to a whole new level.
And finally, if you didn’t click over to see my personal blog entry on the Miami trip, here’s what the fabulous hotel pool was like:
What do you think? Not bad for a Doubletree, huh? Just wait for the next Miami inspiration post. . . when I take you inside – and outside of – one of South Beach’s most famous hotels.
Poolside Glamour: Miami’s Mondrian Hotel
Let’s take a peek at Miami’s own Mondrian Hotel, where we spent one glorious day lounging and dining poolside in high style.
We discovered the fabulosity that is the Mondrian’s pool during a mouth-watering birthday dinner at Asia de Cuba, the hotel’s restaurant. When the maitre d’ invited us to return the next day and enjoy the private pool, bar, and lounge areas in the sunshine – well, we just couldn’t refuse. Here’s why:
The Mondrian Hotel, designed by Marcel Wanders, is a svelte, minimalistic, glamorous escape off the beaten path on the Bay side of Miami Beach. Nothing about it is small-scale, from the massive pillared driveway to the oversized, Alice-in-Wonderland-esque restaurant, to the pinch-yourself-this-is-real pool & lounge area overlooking the bay. And while the Asian/Latin fusion fare served up at the restaurant was incredible, it was that outdoor poolside lounge that had us falling head-over-heels for the hotel.
First, you may be green with envy: Tucked behind the outdoor bar, and nestled next to the side of the building is a lime-green sitting area. That may have been the moment I fell in love with the springy color for use in home decor. I’d love to take one of those chairs home with me!
But why sit there when you could be lounging on a recliner in the sand, palm trees overhead, and gazing at the bay?
Or if the sun is just too much for you, you could rent a boxwood cabana for the day. Yes, you read that right. These appeared to be living cabanas, sculpted out of boxwoods. Beneath their graceful arches you and your very swanky friends can lounge on an enormous daybed, chandelier above you, gazing at not the view, but a flat-screen tv. For those of us who would rather recline in the sun, never fear. There are more fantastic seating areas just around the corner!
So that’s the short and sweet version of why I fell in love with the Mondrian Miami.
My posting was inspired by the South Beach post over at the Odi et Amo blog. Be sure to check out her adventures, including her visit to Miami’s design district. I can’t wait to check that out when I return to SoBe this winter! And if you want to read more about my personal Miami shenanigans, or about the South Beach mutt who really knows how to beg, hop on over here!
Why would we go to a fancy hotel’s pool to read?
