Thrifting, Upcycling, Trash Picking

Why bloggers should never drive a SmartCar or Mini Cooper

Are you ready for disappointment?

Ryan’s not writing the follow-up post to yesterday’s What the Hell:  The Homeless Abode Edition.”

I’m sorry. I begged, but apparently a true artist will only work when inspired.  So you’re stuck with my less humorous views of yesterday.

If you want to fire me from your Google reader, I’ll understand.

If I’m not fired, then read on.  But be sure to read yesterday’s WTH first.   I’ll wait.

Ready?  Ok.

Yesterday was a total trash-picking score.  It started out with just one delight, one that was spotted roadside on my evening commute.  An old upholstered chair lay sadly in a pile of rubbish on the curb.  I could just hear her crying out to me “help me, help me!”  Seconds later the station wagon was whipped around, and parked by the rubbish pile’s house.

Tentatively, feeling awfully conspicuous in my black suit and high heels, I peeked at the chair and then lugged her back to my car.  It took an extra special shove to get her to fit . . . she was thisclose to not going in.   But at the Borrowed Abode, we don’t discriminate based on size, and so she came home with me.  Where there’s a will, there’s a way.  And then, as I drove triumphantly home, I realized one rule of home DIY blogging:

Thou shalt not drive a Mini Cooper or a Smart Car.

I mean, where would you put all the junk you want to lug home off the curb?

So by now you’re thinking “Good God, Jane, what the heck are you doing bringing that nasty old chair home with you?”

Well, she may be fugly at first glance, but I can see the potential. I’ve been just dying to find a chair so that I can try my hand at reupholstering it myself.  Granted, I’d hoped to tackle a more simple wooden chair with cushions first, but whatevs.  I’ll give this a go.

I was thinking I might just give her a good steam cleaning and then bring her indoors as-is for the time being, but when I removed the slipcover I found that the original gold upholstery was torn and the foam cushion was crumbling. That means I’ve gotta strip her down before bringing her inside.  Oh well.

But before I rip that old fabric off, I’ll take tons of photos from every angle – so that when I go to reupholster her I can figure out how to do it.  And since we’re calling her a “she,” we’ll call her Bertha after my grandma, who had a chair very similar to this one, which my kittens destroyed in college.

And thus begins the story of Bertha, the big fugly chair with potential.   Bertha, welcome to my back porch.

But this story doesn’t stop with Bertha.  If it did, then Ryan probably wouldn’t have chimed in last night.

So why was I spotted trotting down the street, suitcase in hand, yesterday evening? Well, it turns out you don’t need to have a car to go trash picking!

On the way home from an evening walk, Ryan and I passed a nice house with a huge rubbish pile.  (Ooh, I just LOVE spring cleaning time!)  I spied two vintage American Tourister suitcases peeking out from below a decaying mattress.  I immediately investigated, as Ryan stopped dead in the street to see what on earth I was up to.

A woman came out of the house, and said “Help Yourself!”  I was only about 5% embarrassed to be seen rummaging.  She was lovely, we had a nice chat about upcycling, and I explained to her that she’d most likely be seeing her suitcases reincarnated in my booth at the Viva Vienna festival on Memorial Day Weekend. That’s right, I’ve got some plans up my sleeve, but that’s a topic for another post.

I grabbed the suitcases, and away we went.  There was an extra bounce in my step from the sheer joy at the three-piece trash picking extravaganza that the day had become.  At this point Ryan took the larger of the two from me and carried it.  Noticing that he looked less than thrilled to be strolling through the ‘hood with a ratty old suitcase in hand, I offered to carry them both.  This is where the What the Hell was born.

Ryan pointed out that he was stuck.  If he chose to let me carry the suitcases, since I was the stubborn one who grabbed them rather than coming back later with the car, then he’d look like an ass to anyone who passed.  Especially if they thought the suitcases were actually packed and heavy.  Thus, carrying it was the lesser of two evils.  (Note to self:  employ this catch-22 situation again in the future when boyfriend compliance is needed!)

And so, last evening, Ryan and I strolled down the street, each with a suitcase in hand.  It surely looked odd to anyone glancing out their window, as the closest metro stop was over 1 mile away.  Ryan quipped that he was half expecting someone to stop and offer us a ride.  It’s that kind of town.

But no ride was offered, and we returned home- at which point Ryan retreated to his office to compose a blog entry.  Unfortunately for us, it was only 4 lines long this time.

I guess next time I’ll have to find a stray dog, some rusty scraps of metal, and a night stand or something for him to carry home from a walk.

So, tell me.  What’s the craziest or most exciting thing you’ve found in the trash lately?

Too funny! And SO SAD that he didn’t want to write a follow up.

The chair reminds me a bit of the one Jen at Home in the Country recovered for her office. I think it’s the folds in the back pillow that remind me. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!

I went on a job interview that required a client visit on Monday. On our way back from the client visit my interviewer said “Oh God, I hope you don’t embarrass easily” as she whipped the car around, and pulled up to a large item pickup pile. Her and I got a book shelf into her car, but sadly had to leave a cane chair behind. I think I scored some brownie points for jumping out just as quickly as she did. 🙂

Jessica, that is totally awesome! Can I work for this woman? 🙂

Do you have an interest in rehabilitative home health care? Yeah, I’m not so sure either. It was a fun car ride at least, and my new job starts soon. At least I’m good with people, and it will pay some bills! 🙂

Ryan reminds me a lot of my guy. Just recently he complained, “If you’re going to continue with this blogging thing, you’re going to need someone else to take your pictures.” Sometimes these guys just don’t know how to have fun. Sticks in the mud. 😉 I sometimes force Jesse to blog, and it’s usually when I do that he doesn’t give me solid gold material. I am sure Ryan will be inspired in due time. Oh and also, we just moved to a new rental, and I am so excited to start all over again. Thanks for being my borrowed abode inspiration.

That IS really exciting that you’ve moved to the new place, I always love
starting from scratch. I think the first few weeks are the best, when
everything feels so new and you’re playing around with where to put things
      🙂

And yeah, I bet Jesse and Ryan could compare notes, aka complaints 😉

haha! I love this, Jane. And that photo of you with the suitcase is so awesome.

Oh my word, you are too funny! Believe it or not, in our fam Josh is usually the one who stops at “free” signs along the road. I am usually too embarrassed! Haha! I’m getting bolder though, and it sure is fun to see nice furniture for free. I can’t think of anything lately though. Good luck with the reupholstery! I bet you will be a rockstar at it. Can’t wait to see the finished result!

I still have that old sofa in my sunroom waiting for you to get your hands on reupholstering if you want it…oh, and I LOVE my black trunk coffee table that I found in someones trailer of trash 🙂

Oh! Oh my gosh, I’d totally forgotten – and YES, I absolutely want that
sofa!!! Don’t let me forget next time we get together 🙂

I have never had any luck finding freebies like that! I wish I did, maybe I’m just not observant enough. Awesome find with the chair!

    • Reply Jane @ The Borrowed Abode at 5:25 pm

Kate – I didn’t used to have ANY luck either. But I think you just have to
keep your eyes open, and really don’t be afraid to be nosy, or whip that car
around for a few slow drive-bys. It doesn’t count unless you freak out the
trash pile’s neighbors with your stalking tendencies, perhaps. 🙂
Good luck, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you!!

Oh I love it…it really made me laugh!!! And I crazy love the chair…I’ve been looking for a chair like that for my office but I wouldn’t even know where to begin to reupholster…I am really looking forward to the rebirth of “Bertha”….

    • Reply Jane @ The Borrowed Abode at 5:56 pm

I, too, have no idea where to begin…I figure I’ll strip it down and use
the old fabric as the template for the new. Worst case it looks wonky, and
I proudly tell people “don’t mind my odd chair, I re-upholstered it myself!”
      🙂

No matter what, Bertha will at least be a good practice chair, and it can be a little tricky.

    As for the suitcases…YES PLEASE.

LOL, Jane!  I’d go trash picking with you anytime!  At 0% embarrassment!  Hahaa!

The best thing I ever picked up, or maybe it was the best circumstances, Carl (yes, this was before we got married, and he still asked me to marry him!) and I were roller bladeing (yes, this was a long time ago, when we first met) and it happened to be trash day.  Well, we rolled up on this perfectly perfect and large Weber BBQ grill (like this: http://tinyurl.com/3oqnwz8).  ON WHEELS!  So, once he relented to my begging (plus, he wanted to BBQ!), he tipped it back, and skated home with it, pushing it all the way!  I really, really wish I could have had a picture of us roller bladeing home with this huge and LOUD bbq!  LOL!

Another great find were a couple of large Rubbermaid storage bins, with lids.  Score!

I look forward to more trash picking postings!  =)

I love this and I’m glad I came across your blog today.  I do have a question.  Do you have any idea what style of chair that is?  I have two of them and I’ve been looking for slipcovers or something and can’t find anything.  I may give reupholster a try but I’m not sure how that’s going to go.  Again love the post.

    Eeek! I’m so excited.
I just started reading your blog (it’s fantastic, by the way!) and being renters ourselves, my husband and I decided to renew some older furniture items. One thing we didn’t have though, was armchairs.

I picked up a pair of chairs at S.A. almost identical to the one you found and we’re planning on reupholstering (for the first time) them – foam and everything! It will definitely be exciting to see what you do with yours as well!

I have just started my blog about our projects, thoughts, and life here: http://www.lifelookingforward.blogspot.com and I’ll be posting our chair re-do info there!

Great blog, and I can’t wait to see your new chair!

Hi Anya! Thanks for saying hi! I can’t wait to see what you do with your
      chairs.
I haven’t spilled the beans on the blog yet, but I had to send the chair
away…it turned out to be covered in mold on the inside 🙁 so we didn’t
think it was such a good idea after we found that out. But now I’m back on
the hunt, looking for a new chair!
