Wanted: Rental decorating challenges

Ever since we moved to our renovated rental house, I’ve felt like I’m neglecting the topic of rental/apartment decorating – simply because we don’t have all the weird and odd and ugly challenges that many of my past rentals had.  And the reason I started this blog (1.5 years ago) was because I loved the challenge of making a temporary house a personalized home.  I’m still decorating and DIYing the heck outta this new home, but I no longer need to create cute storage for a tiny kitchen, or turn my dining room into an office.

This is where you guys come in.  Starting this December, I’m looking for a few good projects to virtually help others with, and/or questions to answer for you, my awesome readers.  If you’re stumped on how to decorate a room in your rental house/apartment/dorm room, or just have a question about rental decorating, give me a shout!   Alternately, if you’ve got a rented space that you’re eager to show off, send some photos my way for a shout-out on the blog.  Drop me a line at borrowedabode at gmail dot com.

So bring it on, show me your ugliest spaces, your toughest decorating/storage/organization situations.  Because I love a good challenge, and I do believe that a rented space can make a fabulous home!

Oh I am *SO* taking advantage of this! =) Our overly-blue rented office consists of gorgeous wood bookcase and….. a beerpong table as a desk. and mucho tacky plastic storage containers as file/office supply wranglers. It’s pretty bad…

I’m off to do some serious work on ze closet but I will send pictures soon, if you’re up for the challenge =)

I have this huge ceiling to floor mirror in the master bedroom. It is the perfect spot for my bed but I am afraid to put my headboard against for fear of breaking it. Love to hear some suggestions. Will take pics this weekend

I know this was quite a bit ago,  but I just wanted to thank you for doing this for us!

My husband and I are moving again this December to another rental (not sure the type because we haven’t found it yet!). I would love to drop you a line when that happens for your advice! This will be the first time we have ever been able to decorate something ourselves, and could use all the help/advice you have to offer!

I know you’re swamped at the moment; I just wanted to thank you for this amazing blog (The “What the Hell?” section always cheers me up! I’m not alone in the fact that “Repurpose = White Paint”!

    Hi Michelle!
First, I’m so glad that the What the Hells crack you up. That’s only a taste of what I have to live with. ;)

Please let me know when you are moved into your new rental! I’d love to brainstorm ideas with you!!

Hi Jane! I don’t quite have a rental design challenge…yet! I’ll be moving in the next month and will definitely be calling on your skills for help then. I do, however, have a rental moving question for ya; we’re big into recycling/being green and saving money, so I’m trying to find used boxes. I’ve checked out the usual suspects (craigslist, freecycle) but haven’t gotten any leads. Any ideas as to what I should do next, or if I should go with another moving plan entirely?

Thanks for your time and the amazing inspiration! You rock!!

Hmm, boxes seem to be getting harder and harder to find!
Have you tried liquor stores? They give you smaller boxes, but the up-side is that you don’t end up with anything too heavy, and they are super sturdy.
And maybe some stores like Target or Costco?

Let me know how it goes – I’d love to help you out with ideas once you move! -Jane
