New Abode, Part 7: Studio / Dressing Room

On the main level of our new house we have three bedrooms.  You’ve seen the Master, but what about the other two?  One is my very own dressing room/studio/office.  The other is my boyfriend’s office & dressing room.  We each have our own room for our own mess!  It feels so luxurious.  And it keeps the mess out of our bedroom.

Here’s the view when you enter the room.  I’ve got half of my desk set up, still waiting on the other half, which will jut out into the room in an “L” shape.  And there to the side of the desk is the fun flea market painting that I shared earlier this week.

The windows let in tons of light, and I can keep my eye on my square foot garden while I work.

In keeping with tradition, I’m using my mid-century modern record cabinet to store all my scrapbook paper.  Above it I’ve set up a jewelry and hat station.  I’ve started hanging my hat collection on the wall to add a bit of flair to the room.  Plus, having them visible helps me wear them more often.

But the closet.  Oh, the closet.  Finally, after years of living in ancient buildings with super awkward clothes closets, I have a large (to me) closet that allows me to display all of my clothes at once.  Hallelujah.  This is why I wanted to store my clothes in this room.   I’ve got plans to revamp the storage design with some Elfa shelving from the Container Store, but I’m saving up for it first.

Messy though it may look, I’m still storing all my belts and other similar accessories in a hanging sorter on the back of my door.  I simply have yet to find a better way to organize them.  It’s tough to beat clear plastic pockets.

And this sad little corner of my room is where my dresser and laundry are.  I don’t want to put much effort into it because I intend to bring in a large bookshelf for craft supply storage.  I just don’t know what I’ll do with my dresser contents yet.

For the time being I’m storing my scarves, sunglasses, and hair accessories in items I already had on hand – two decorative boxes and one vintage Pyrex dish.  I love that dish, and I rarely get to use it – so why not see it every day when I grab my shades?

I’ve had my “inspiration fabric” hanging above my desk for a few weeks now.  Only problem is that I contacted the distributor to purchase some, only to find out that it was already out of print.  Total bummer!

I completely love this room, even though it’s not finished yet.  I love that I have my own space.  That Ryan has his.  That we each keep our clothing messes in our own spaces.  But more importantly, I love that it is my office to create things in.  It feels good, warm, and welcoming, and I love working in it.  I can’t wait to decorate the heck out of it, though.  I’m going to make it the most colorful and wonderful space in the house!

    Hi,
I’m currently reading your blog “cover-to-cover”, so I don’t know if your closet still looks like this,
but I wanted to suggest to hang a curtain or panels on the closet opening, to keep your clothes less dusty and, more importantly, out of the sun light which might make the colors fade on the exposed parts.
This is from my experience of using a closed balcony as a walk-in closet, with Ikea’s Stolmen system. I did lots of hanging, which was great for keeping things neat, but some clothes faded on one shoulder where the sun hit them.

Hey, thanks so much for the advice! I’m currently creating a plan for decorating, and have bought fabric for closet curtains. Right now the light doesn’t seem to hit them directly, but I hadn’t thought of that. I appreciate it!!

[…] It was an exciting year at TBA what with Ryan and I getting engaged.  He planned to decorate his office, but his business trip gave me the chance to give him an engagement surprise using a paint color he had already selected, and some of our favorite vintage pieces from our favorite vintage store.  For all the details, check out the full post. There is more than meets the eye in this room seeing as it doubles as Ryan’s Dressing Room/Closet (Kind of like my studio). […]
