Design Inspiration

Tub of inspiration

One of the great things about DIY design is that you can take inspiration from almost any setting, whether it’s another person’s home, or a corporate building, or a field, or pretty much anything in our world.  Last weekend, during a visit to my favorite Virginia vineyard, I spied some absolutely divine ideas in the winery’s rustic cabin-esque sitting area and wine cellar.
Divine Inspiration #1:

Copper tub of throw blankets.

Sitting right there by the toasty wood stove was an old copper tub with several cozy fleece blankets for guests.   The second I spotted it I knew I had to implement that idea in my own home, and I said to my friends – I kid you not – “That is the best idea! Hold on, I have to take a photo for my blog!”
Yeah, I really said that.  If that isn’t blog dorkiness in action, I don’t know what is.  But that’s part of the fun.  Isn’t it a great idea??
Aside from the cozy charm it brings to a room, I love it because it keeps your blankets all neat and tidy. I don’t like mess on my sofa – just sofa and pillows. Plus, the cats inevitably curl up on the blankets, getting them all hairy.  This way guests can easily reach for a blanket, and so can I.  Can’t wait to scour the thrift stores and antique markets to give this idea a shot.
 Divine inspiration #2:

Simple yet elegant candle sconces.

I don’t know where they found these things, but I was just looooving the simple glass and iron (?) candle sconces that adorned the support posts throughout the winery’s cellar. I’d love sconces like that on all the walls of my home.
And here’s a less warm and glow-y shot of the same sconces.

What about you?  Found any good, off-beat inspirations lately?

Am I the only one waiting with bated breath to see this awesome piece of art you got at Art on the Avenue? I might just have to crash your place to get a peek instead 🙂

Thanks for reminding me! I’m waiting to blog about it until I finish painting and hanging shelves on that darn wall in the living room. Hopefully soon!
