Thrifty Fix: Fall Wreath

DIY Fall Wreath

As part of my current project, an apartment entryway makeover, I decided to make a fall wreath.  I was curious how cheaply I could DIY this project.

I contemplated forming my own wreath out of branches and wire, but seeing as this was my first ever wreathing attempt, I took the easy route.  For only two bucks I snagged a straw wreath form at Michaels – it was their cheapest wreath.  It was a bit messy to work with, but it served its purpose.

Here’s my tray of accessories:  pine cones, a fake ear of corn, fall flowers and leaves, and two fall berry garlands.

First I wound the wire garlands around the wreath.  Between the kittens attacking the berries and the wires getting stuck on each other, that was definitely the trickiest part.  Then I tucked the leaves into the clear plastic thread that bound the straw to the wreath, adding dots of glue for good measure.

Finally, I speared the wreath with the faux flowers which I had cut from their stems.  I added an ear of corn – why?  Just because I had it laying around. One messy hour later, here’s the finished result!

I thought it needed a bit more “oomph,” so I added a few pine cones.  You can’t see them very well, but here’s the pine cone enhanced version:

And now to brag about the cost. . .

  • Straw Wreath Form – $1.99
  • Faux Fall Flowers – $1.99  (on sale)
  • Fall berry garlands – $2.49
  • Fall leaves – Free!  (I already owned them.)
  • Corn – Free!   (I already owned it.)

Thanks to Michaels’ Arts & Crafts, where fall decor is already 60% off, I was able to DIY a fall wreath for under $7.00.  Not too shabby!  Stay tuned for the apartment-entrance makeover reveal coming [hopefully] next week!

*Despite their valiant attempts at choking on faux berries, no kittens were harmed in the making of this wreath.*
